Test Development
How are testing protocols developed for GF-5?
The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) oversees the process of developing the tests which determine the necessary physical and performance attributes for API Engine Oil Performance Categories and ILSAC GF Performance Specifications.
The ASTM does not exclusively create and carry out the test methods. Instead, automobile OEMs, oil marketers, additive companies, and other testing laboratories can become test sponsors and propose various testing methods to measure an engine oil's ability to meet performance requirements.
Those organizations that are selected as test sponsors, recommend to ASTM, testing protocols to define and evaluate a specific performance parameter. An ASTM team is then formed to study the test results and determine if the proposed test accurately and efficiently meets its objective. The final determination of acceptability is the role of the ASTM approval group.
Test Development for GF-5
Specific to GF-5, test development will be conducted by an ILSAC/OIL Sequence VID Test Development Consortium. The Consortium develops a draft procedure and runs tests to validate the procedure. When complete, a Draft procedure and detailed research report goes to ASTM Test Development Team.
ASTM Test Development Team Duties
- Review and Comment
- Design Precision Matrix
- Write Draft Procedure in ASTM format
- Report on Precision Matrix to Industry
- Submit procedure to ASTM process for approval
ASTM International is a standards developing organization and considered a competent technical authority. This independent, non-profit organization is one of the largest voluntary standards development organizations in the world. ASTM International standards have an important role in the information infrastructure that guides design, manufacturing and trade in the global economy.
