Society of Automotive Engineers and GF-5
What role does SAE play in GF-5?
The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) is a non-profit educational and scientific organization comprising of more than 90,000 engineers and scientists. SAE develops technical information on all forms of self-propelled vehicles including automobiles, trucks and buses, off-highway equipment, aircraft, aerospace vehicles, marine, rail, and transit systems. The organization distributes this information through its meetings, books, technical papers, magazines, standards, reports, professional development programs, and electronic databases.
SAE does not directly influence passenger car motor oil specification development, but the organization does play an important role through its support of ILSAC and ILSAC/OIL. The creation of the SAE Standard J300, which is the blend viscosity standard that defines the criteria for each motor oil viscosity grade, is vital information for the development of a new specification.
SAE Fuels and Lubricants Division consists of various Technical Committees such as Technical Committee 1 which addresses engine lubrication information pertinent to the classification, performance characteristics, physical and chemical properties, and test requirements of both new and used engine lubricating oils for passenger car engines.
