States Defend California’s EPA’s Motor Vehicle Waiver

An 18-state coalition led by New York announced plans to intervene in a lawsuit filed by the National Automobile Dealers Association and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.  The coalition seeks to intervene to defend the U.S. EPA’s decision to allow California to set its own limits on greenhouse gas emissions from motor vehicles. California’s standards are expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from cars by 30 percent by 2016.  New York has adopted California’s standards, and at least 17 other states have done, or plan to do, the same.  The case is pending in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit.
