Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative Holds First US Carbon Sale
September 29, 2008: The first
US cap and trade auction raised $40 million and was facilitated by the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, a consortium of 10 northeastern states. RGGI established limits on the amount of carbon that can be released by power generators and forced them to purchase allowances to cover excess emissions. The success of the auction is an indication that efforts to reduce emissions and global warming are gaining ground. To read more about the auction in the Washington Post, click here.
