EPA Proposes Testing of Certain High Volume Production Chemicals
U.S. EPA proposes a new rule under the Toxic Substances Control Act that would require manufacturers, importers and processors of certain high production volume chemicals to conduct testing to obtain screening level data for health and environmental effects. This would include testing for chemical fate (physical/chemical properties and biodegradation), ecotoxicity (in fish, Daphnia, and algae), acute toxicity, genetic toxicity (gene mutations and chromosomal aberrations), repeated close toxicity, and developmental and reproductive toxicity.
