Test Limits
How final test limits are determined
New tests and testing protocols are developed as tools to evaluate motor oil performance. For the GF-5 specification, the new perfomance testing tools need to have Pass/Fail limits in order to be useful. It is the role of the ILSAC/OIL committee to establish what tests are needed and to set test limits that define the performance level of GF-5.

Acceptance Criteria or test limits are set based on the performance of demonstration oils and other oils used in the test development process. The proposed criteria are also influenced by the OEM desires as stated in the original Needs Statement for ILSAC GF-5. These acceptance criteria are established as test limits. Results of the precision matrix testing conducted during the test development phase are also used to set test limits.
Candidate formulations must meet or exceed these limits in order to qualify as ILSAC GF-5 Oils.
