Notification of Potential Need
Who identifies the need for a new motor oil specification?
Before the process of developing a new motor oil specification can be set in motion, the need to do so must be officially identified. This responsibility falls to the International Lubricant Standardization and Approval Committee (ILSAC). This organization, which is comprised of the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers (AAM) and Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA), determines the need for a new oil performance specification.
Often the need for a new specification comes from automobile manufacturers who demand new lubricants to be compatible with advancing engine designs, emission regulations and fuel economy requirements.
Consumers' demand for automobiles that offer improved fuel efficiency and improved emissions reductions can lead to government regulations which require significant engine and emission component changes. Lubricants are a key factor in helping new engines meet regulations, which is why lubricant technology must also advance.
Once a clear need for a new oil specification is established, ILSAC will develop a formal Needs Statement and publish the Notification of Potential Need, which begins the process.
