Bringing GF-5 to market - the final steps

Once the GF-5 Specification is official and demonstration oils are evaluated and validated, the API will begin issuing the first licenses for ILSAC GF-5 approved motor oils.  Licensing is expected to begin in 3rd quarter 2010.

To obtain an API license, oil marketers must demonstrate their formulation's performance.  The API Engine Oil Licensing and Certification System (API EOLCS) requires oil marketers to provide documentation of required test results with each application. Once the licensing application data is submitted to API, and application fees are paid, a license can be obtained.

When the licensing process is completed, an oil marketer can manufacture their new ILSAC GF-5 motor oils and introduce them to the marketplace. Products with the appropriate labeling and licensing will officially become available for purchase and use with model year 2011 vehicles.
