ASTM International and GF-5

The important role of ASTM International in the development of GF-5

ASTM International, formerly the American Society for Testing and Materials, is an organization involved in developing and publishing voluntary technical standards. This technical society is responsible for establishing testing techniques and test monitoring which plays a vital role in the development of new motor oil specifications such as GF-5.

ASTM has more than 30,000 members from more than 100 countries working together to develop these standards. Standards are developed by member consensus. Together with the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the ASTM plays another key role in the specification process by verifying the technical need for new engine oil performance categories.

ASTM D02 Committee

This ASTM International Committee on Petroleum Products and Lubricants develops and publishes technical standards relating to the manufacturing and use of petroleum products

ASTM D02.B0 Subcommittee

The focus of ASTM subcommittee D02.B0 is engine oils. This committee contributes to the passenger vehicle motor oil specification process by working with test sponsors on test development. This committee is comprised of representatives from industry companies including equipment builders, lubricant marketers, additive producers and other general interest participants.

ASTM D02.B0 Panel - PCEOPCP

A panel within the D02.B0 subcommittee is the Passenger Car Engine Oil Classification Panel (PCEOCP). PCEOCP is responsible for maintaining existing API Passenger Car Engine Oil Performance Categories and developing new ones as needed

ASTM Team - ESCIT

ESCIT stands for Emission System Compatibility Improvement Team and is a working group and a subcommittee of PCEOCP.  ESCIT has an open meeting which means that anyone can attend (consultants, test labs in addition to ILSAC/OIL).  ESCIT is modifying the Sequence IIIG test to add a measure of phosphorus volatility (sometimes called phos retention).
