The American Chemistry Council and GF-5

What role does ACC play in GF-5?

The American Chemistry Council (ACC) is a trade association representing North American chemical manufacturers. The ACC is charged with improving the public image of the chemical industry by advocating at the federal, state, local, and judicial level. The ACC implemented the Responsible Care program in 1988 and since then more than 52 countries have implemented this initiative. ACC members include many specialty chemical manufacturers including those who produce lubricant additives.

The ACC PAPTG contributes to the passenger vehicle motor oil specification process by establishing the Code of Practice (COP) for testing in the chemical industry. The ACC PAPTG reviews the tests that are proposed to ensure engine tests are fit for purpose. ACC PAPTG will only accept tests into their Code of Practice that respond to additive chemistry in a consistent, predictable way.

The ACC Petroleum Additives Panel is composed of additive companies who develop performance enhancing chemicals for use in automotive and industrial fuels and lubricants.  This group is also a part of ILSAC/OIL and has one vote.

The ACC Product Approval Protocol Task Group (PAPTG), a task group of the Petroleum Additives Panel is composed of additive companies.  This group is responsible for development and maintenance of the Product Approval Code of Practice.. PAPTG provides guidance to the American Petroleum Institute Lubricant Committee (API LC) and to ILSAC/OIL to help determine the technical and commercial feasibility of producing motor oils that meet the new specification.
