How will the lubricant industry work together to develop GF-5-certified products?

Collaboration is the key to success

The International Lubricant Standardization and Approval Committee (ILSAC), the American Petroleum Institute (API), and the American Chemistry Council (ACC) oversee the development of passenger car motor oil specifications and the certification and licensing of lubricants in the United States. These organizations are in the midst of developing the GF-5 specification that will guide lubricant manufacturers in the production of engine oils for MY 2011 engine designs. The process and responsible organizations for each step are shown below.

The Process

The ILSAC GF-5 specification evolves from the collaboration of numerous  industry committees that research the required physical and performance characteristics as well as the appropriate testing procedures. These committees are comprised of industry experts and key decision makers.

Final Approvals

API and ILSAC will make a joint final approval for the new GF-5 motor oil specification.  This will allow vehicle manufacturers, oil marketers, and additive companies to operate with a common specification.

Individual auto manufacturers maintain the option to issue independent motor oil specifications; however, industry experts agree that to do so would be less efficient than subscribing to a common industry specification.
