Summary Report ASTM PCEOCP VID Matrix Design and Funding (MDF) Subgroup Meeting
04/25/2008
A meeting of the ASTM PCEOCP VID Matrix Design and Funding (MDF) Subgroup was held via teleconference on April 25, 2008. The Subgroup recommends to the PCEOCP Committee how the Precision Matrix for the Sequence VID fuel economy test should be run and how the costs are shared. The results of the teleconference are summarized below.
The Subgroup sent out letters the week of April 7th to the VID Consortium, PCEOCP, API, and ILSAC, all in support of the Sequence VID Precision Matrix test.
VID Consortium
The objective of the letter that was sent to the Chair of the VID Consortium, Jim Linden, was to request the Consortium to estimate dates for release of the engine test stand design information and Consortium completion.
Linden expects the test procedure, oils, and parts to be released after the May 1, 2008 Consortium call. Linden also expects a prove-out matrix to start in June 2008 and could continue into July. He also expected VID reference oils to meet the criteria of "fully formulated, GF-4 capable" as those were the conditions when the VID reference oils were selected.
ILSAC
The objective of the letter sent to the Chair of ILSAC, Jim Linden, was to request release of an OEM EPA certification oil as a reference oil to tie the Sequence VID to real world vehicle performance. ILSAC is working on selecting the oil and will decide in the next two weeks.
PCEOCP
The objective of the letter sent to the Chair of the PCEOCP, Thom Smith, is for the PCEOCP to determine the number of laboratories and stands to be included in the Sequence VID matrix testing and also to solicit a GF-5 demonstration oil from the industry.
Smith will send out a letter sometime in May prior to the next PCEOCP meeting to be held during ASTM in mid-June. Jim Linden indicated that the prove-out matrix will not be done before the ASTM meeting. The possible number of test stands for the precision matrix is eight. Smith will request a GF-5 demonstration oil "at or near the limits of GF-5".
API
The objective of the letter that was sent to the Chair of the API BOI/VGRA Task Force, John Rosenbaum, was to determine the testing that will be required for BOI/VGRA (Base Oil Interchange/Viscosity Grade Read Across). BOI/VGRA Task Force has not yet met. API will try to push for a call.
The following criteria were discussed to frame the Precision Matrix for the VID oils:
- Certified or Factory Fill (F/F)
- GF-5 Demonstration Oil
- VID non friction modified oil
- VID different viscosity non friction modified oil
- VID friction modified effect oil
For test stands and laboratories,
- Maximum five labs and eight stands
- Minimum two labs and three stands
- Statistic was to come back with relative merits of min/max
Wang asked the question if some prove-out matrix work could be used in the Precision Matrix
Assume two oils will go forward as a reference oil and assume a minimum of six runs on each of these two oils
The MDF Subgroup needs to ask the contract labs the likely cost per test
